History

The texts that list the yugadis, the days on which the ages of the world began, name this Navami among them, and the Nirnayasindhu quotes the list. That is the root of the name Akshaya, 'unfailing': merit begun on the first day of an age is held never to be used up. The amla tree's place in the day comes from the Kartika-mahatmya tradition, which the Dharmasindhu and Nirnayasindhu quote: worship of Hari under the amla tree in this month, and a meal in its shade, carry great merit. Popular telling adds that Lakshmi first worshipped Vishnu and Shiva together under an amla tree on this day; that story is tradition and has not been traced to a text.
