Each day’s muhurat for your city
Four days of worship of the Sun and Chhathi Maiya, Kartika Shukla Chaturthi to Saptami: a purifying bath and meal, the Kharna fast, arghya to the setting sun on Shashthi, and arghya to the rising sun on Saptami.

• Bathe, clean the house and kitchen, and eat one pure meal cooked without onion or garlic.
• Keep a waterless fast through the day; after sunset offer kheer of jaggery and rice with rotis, eat it as prasad, and begin the long fast.
• In the afternoon carry the bamboo baskets of thekua and fruit to the ghat; standing in water, offer arghya to the setting sun.
• Before sunrise return to the water and offer arghya to the rising sun; then break the fast and share the prasad.
Chhath is the great Sun festival of Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh and the Nepal terai, now kept wherever their families live. Its heart is the arghya offered standing in water, first to the setting sun and then to the rising sun. The Taittiriya Aranyaka speaks of the good that comes to one who contemplates the sun as it rises and as it sets; that passage frames the honour given to the sun at both moments, though the nibandhas consulted give no rule for Chhath itself, and the four-day observance is living tradition, open to every family. A Chaiti Chhath is also kept in Chaitra.
