History

The three flying cities of the asura brothers known together as Tripura could be destroyed only by a single arrow at the one moment they aligned. Shiva loosed that arrow on the full moon of Kartika and became Tripurari, the enemy of Tripura. The Nirnayasindhu, quoting the Bhargavarchana-dipika, sets the Tripura festival at the twilight of this full moon, with lamps offered so that every creature that sees them, insect or bird, in water or on land, may be freed from rebirth. At Kashi this rite grew into Dev Deepawali, the lighting of the ghats. Its present scale is a revival of the late twentieth century, and that part is practice.
