The 5-day vidhi

1
Yama-deepa on Trayodashi

• At nightfall on Trayodashi, place a lamp outside the house for Yama, praying that untimely death stays away.

2
Abhyanga snana on Chaturdashi

• Before sunrise — best between moonrise and sunrise — bathe with sesame oil, wave apamarga over the body, then offer water to Yama.

3
Lakshmi puja on Amavasya

• At pradosha, light rows of lamps and worship Lakshmi, then take the evening meal.

4
Govardhan puja on Pratipada

• In the morning worship Govardhana and the cows; Bali is honoured with a figure in five colours.

5
Bhai Dooj

• Brothers eat at their sister's home from her hands and honour her with gifts; Yama is worshipped in the afternoon.

History

These are five linked observances at the turn of Ashvina and Kartika. On Trayodashi a lamp is set outside for Yama at nightfall so that untimely death stays away. On Chaturdashi a sesame-oil bath is taken before sunrise, with the apamarga plant waved over the body and water offered to Yama under fourteen names. On Amavasya lamps are lit and Lakshmi is worshipped at dusk, torches are shown to light the way of the ancestors, and late in the night Alakshmi is sent out of the home. Pratipada brings the worship of King Bali, of cows and of Govardhana, remembering Krishna lifting the hill; and on Dvitiya, as Yamuna once fed her brother Yama in her home, brothers eat from their sisters' hands.
