In the evening bathe, wear clean clothes, and set Hanuman's image or murti facing south or east on a red cloth, with a lamp of sesame or mustard oil beside it.
Offer Hanuman sindoor mixed with oil (chola), red flowers, a garland and a coconut, as is the custom on this night.
Offer boondi or besan laddoo, jaggery with roasted gram, or a sweet of the household, and keep a betel leaf beside it.
At midnight, while Chaturdashi lasts, recite the Hanuman Chalisa — many families recite it eleven times — or the Bajrang Baan or Sundar Kand, for protection from fear and evil.
Close with the aarti of Hanuman, keep the oil lamp burning through the night, and share the prasad in the morning.
Across most of North India Hanuman's birth is kept on Chaitra Purnima; in Gujarat and Saurashtra it is kept on the night of Kartika Krishna Chaturdashi, the eve of Diwali, where the night of Kali Chaudas is his Jayanti. On this night of the dark fortnight, when the household guards itself against fear and ill-luck before the new moon of Lakshmi, Hanuman is worshipped as the protector who drives away evil, with sindoor, oil and the Hanuman Chalisa. No primary scriptural text for this night's Hanuman worship has been traced; it comes down as living practice, and the almanacs list it as Hanuman Puja on the night of Chaturdashi.
