Thoroughly clean the entire house before sunset. Draw a rangoli of lotus flowers and Lakshmi's footprints at the entrance to welcome the goddess.
Arrange a thali with an oil diya, ghee diya, agarbatti, marigold flowers, kumkum, akshat (rice grains), coins, and sweets. Place a Lakshmi-Ganesh idol or image, facing east or north-east.
Always begin any puja by invoking Lord Ganesha. Offer a flower and three pinches of akshat. Chant 'Om Gan Ganapataye Namah' three times to remove obstacles.
At Pradosh Kaal (after sunset), light the main diya facing north-east. Offer 16 items to Lakshmi — water, flowers, incense, lamp, and sweets. Chant the Lakshmi Stuti or Shri Sukta. This is the most important moment of the evening.
Wave the lit diya in a clockwise circle before the goddess while singing the aarti. All family members join together. Ring the bell continuously during the aarti.
At Nishita Kaal (midnight), light a second lamp for Kali Maa. Offer red hibiscus flowers and chant 'Om Krim Kalikaye Namah' 108 times. This is the tantric Diwali observed in Bengal and certain traditions.
Place diyas on every window, doorstep, and balcony. A lamp at the south-facing entrance is especially important — it is lit for the ancestors. Keep all lamps burning through the night.

Lord Rama, after defeating Ravana and rescuing Sita in Lanka, returned to Ayodhya on this Amavasya night after 14 years of exile. The citizens lit thousands of earthen lamps to welcome their beloved prince, turning the darkest night into the brightest. Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the cosmic ocean during the Samudra Manthan on this night and chose Vishnu as her consort. Lord Krishna and Satyabhama destroyed the demon Narakasura, freeing 16,100 imprisoned women — celebrated as Narak Chaturdashi the day before in South India. The Jain tradition observes it as the day Lord Mahavira attained final liberation.

The rule The Lakshmi puja needs the Amavasya at pradosh, and the day is chosen by that. · When the Amavasya holds at pradosh on the later day, or on both days, the later day is taken; when only the earlier day has it, the Lakshmi puja is done that evening and the morning oil bath on the next day. · One more measure: when the Amavasya runs a ghatika into the night on the later day, Sukharatri is kept then. When neither evening has it One view takes the later day when the Amavasya lasts long enough on it; schools differ in this rare case. Swati On whichever of the three days the moon is in Swati, that day is the most auspicious. On this page The date and the pradosh window are worked out from this rule for your city.
A reminder at the muhurat, the aarti to sing along, the katha to read.
