History

Braj tradition holds that this was the day Krishna and Balarama, grown past early boyhood, were first sent out to herd the cows themselves rather than the calves. The village honoured the cows and the young gopas together, and the day kept the name Gopashtami. The Bhagavata tells of Krishna reaching that age and taking the herds to Vrindavan's forest, but it names no date; the date is the tradition's. The rite of the day — worshipping, circling and following the cows — is set down in the Dharmasindhu.
