• Many keep a fast until they have offered the pushpanjali; those who cannot fast take fruit and milk (practice)
• Jagaddhatri is worshipped in her form of four arms, the colour of the morning sun, holding conch, discus, bow and arrow, seated on a lion that stands over an elephant (practice) • Homes may worship a picture or a ghata; community pujas set up a clay image (practice)
• In many homes and pandals the Saptami, Ashtami and Navami pujas are all performed on the Navami itself; at Chandannagar and some other places the worship runs over several days (practice) • A priest leads the puja by the Bengal paddhati; the family joins at the anjali and the arati (practice)
• Offer flowers and bel leaves at the anjali, with lamps and incense (practice)
• Offer fruit, sweets and the cooked bhog — khichuri, fried vegetables and payesh — then join the arati (practice) • Share the bhog as prasad.
• Recall Uma Haimavati of the Kena Upanishad, who taught the proud devas that their victory was Brahman's; Bengal sees Jagaddhatri as that power that humbles pride and holds the world in being (practice)
Jagaddhatri, 'she who holds the world', is worshipped on the bright Navami of Kartika, a month after Durga Puja, above all in Bengal (practice). The Bengal tradition reads her as Uma Haimavati of the Kena Upanishad: after a victory the devas claimed the glory for themselves; Brahman appeared before them as a mysterious yaksha, Agni could not burn a blade of grass set before him nor Vayu blow it away, and when Indra drew near the being vanished — and in its place stood Uma Haimavati, who taught Indra that the victory had been Brahman's. The Upanishad does not name Jagaddhatri or prescribe her puja; that reading, her image of four arms on a lion standing over an elephant — pride brought low — and the order of her puja come from the Bengal tradition and its paddhati (practice). The same tithi is Akshaya Navami, which the Dharmasindhu counts among the yugadis and the Vrataraja keeps with bath, gifts and fasting in the forenoon. Krishnanagar in Nadia and Chandannagar are famed for the festival (practice).
