Puja Vidhi

1
Lamp at the threshold

At dusk light a lamp of sesame oil at the main door, facing south, and keep the house lit through the evening.

2
Hanuman puja

Worship Hanuman with sindoor, oil, flowers and a coconut, and recite the Hanuman Chalisa for protection.

3
Mahakali at night

Late at night, while Chaturdashi lasts, worship Mahakali with red flowers, kumkum and a ghee lamp, and chant her mantra.

4
Kakdo

After dark many families carry out a little food — often vada or rice — with a lamp, wave it around the household, and leave it at a crossroads without looking back.

5
Kajal and rest

Prepare kajal from the lamp's soot and apply it to the children's eyes for protection. Keep the night calm; quarrels and harsh words are avoided by custom.

History

Kali Chaudas is the Gujarati name and night of the fourteenth of the dark fortnight before Diwali, the same tithi the rest of India keeps as Narak Chaturdashi. Where the morning belongs to the bath that frees one from the fear of naraka, the night here belongs to Mahakali, who destroys fear itself, and to Hanuman, the protector. The kakdo and the threshold lamp come from household custom. No primary scriptural text for the night rite under this name has been traced; it comes down as living practice.
