Karthigai Deepam is the Tamil festival of lamps, kept in the month of Karthigai on the day the moon is in the Krittika star, which often falls on or near the full moon; when the two differ, Tamil temples and homes follow Krittika (practice). Its story is told in the Arunachala-mahatmya of the Skanda Purana: Brahma and Vishnu, disputing which of them was greater, met a column of light whose top and base neither could find; humbled, they asked that the unbearable light take the gentler form of a hill, and that every year in Kartika, under Krittika at the close of day, it show its own light again. The same mahatmya has Gauri worship the hill at nightfall under Krittika, and praises lamps offered on that star. The Matsya Purana tells how the six Krittikas gave Parvati water from a lotus leaf and how Skanda, born with six faces, came to be called Kartikeya, the son of the Krittikas — so Murugan too is honoured with the lamps. The Nirnayasindhu gives lamps at the evening sandhya for the Kartika full moon; the Tamil lamps keep that hour by custom. The rows of agal vilakku, the Maha Deepam lit on the summit of the Arunachala hill at Tiruvannamalai, the girivalam around it, the sokkapanai bonfires before temples, and Thrikarthika in Kerala are Tamil and Kerala custom; old Sangam poetry is traditionally cited for a lamp festival in this month (practice).
