• Bathe at a river or tirtha in the dawn window this page shows — today closes the month-long Kartika bath. • Remember Vishnu, name the place and the day, offer water to Damodara, and bathe standing in water up to the navel (Dharmasindhu). • If you cannot reach a river, bathe at home with a little Ganga water added (practice)
• Vows kept for Kartika close today if they were not closed on the Dvadashi; give away what was given up — a lamp for a lamp-vow, a bell for a vow of silent meals, and so on (Dharmasindhu). • The five-day Bhishma Panchaka begun on the bright Ekadashi also closes today.
• Give food, clothes or a lamp as you can; the digests count a bath, a gift or japa today among the most fruitful of the year, above all when the moon is in Krittika.
• At the evening sandhya, in the window this page shows, give a lamp in a Shiva temple, as the Sanatkumara-samhita in the Vrataraja asks, and bow to Shiva as Tripurantaka. • Then light lamps at home — the doorway, the tulsi, the courtyard — and at a river or tank if you can.
• In Kashi the ghats of the Ganga are lined with lamps tonight and lamps are set afloat on the river; many homes everywhere float a lamp or light extra lamps for the gods (practice)
• Keep a single simple meatless meal after dusk; the Matsya Purana, in the Nirnayasindhu, pairs this day with a meal after nightfall (nakta).
Fruit PrasadKartika Purnima, the full moon that closes the month of Kartika, is also called Tripuri or Tripurari Purnima. The Vrataraja, carrying the Sanatkumara-samhita's Kartika-mahatmya, tells that on this full moon Shiva destroyed the three moving cities of the daitya Tripura with a single arrow, Vishnu himself being the arrow, and that the gods offered lamps to him in thanks; so a lamp is given in a Shiva temple at dusk. The Matsya Purana tells the fuller Tripura story — the asura Maya's three cities of iron, silver and gold, burnt by one arrow when they came together under Pushya — without naming the day. The same full moon closes Vishnu's month: it is the last day of the month-long Kartika bath, which the Dharmasindhu sets at a river or tirtha while a little night remains, and of the vows kept for the month; the Padma Purana, quoted in the Nirnayasindhu, places Vishnu's Matsya form on this evening. The Nirnayasindhu prizes the day with the moon in Krittika, calls it Mahakartiki with Rohini, and singles out a bath at Pushkara. On this evening the ghats of Kashi are lined with lamps for Dev Deepawali, the 'Diwali of the gods' — a living custom the texts above do not prescribe (practice); Sikhs keep the Gurpurab of Guru Nanak on the same full moon.
