Labh Panchami belongs to the trading life of Gujarat. The new year there begins the day after Diwali, and the first working day of that year is kept for opening the books under Lakshmi's and Ganesha's blessing; 'labh' means gain. The Jain community keeps the same day as Gyan Panchami, honouring knowledge and the scriptures, and that is a separate observance. No primary scriptural text for Labh Panchami has been traced; it comes down as living practice.
