Keep the fast through the day of the Chaturdashi.
At night, ideally at nishita while Chaturdashi lasts, worship Vishnu with lotuses, tulsi and the sixteen offerings.
Offer bilva to Vishnu and tulsi to Shiva.
Keep the night awake with kirtan and the reading of the Lord's deeds. Those completing the Kartika vow do its udyapana tonight.
At arunodaya, while Chaturdashi lasts, bathe — at Manikarnika in Kashi — and worship Shiva. For this rite the fast is kept on the day before.
Break the fast in the morning.
Tradition tells that Vishnu came to Kashi on this day to worship Shiva with a thousand lotuses. When one lotus was found missing, he offered one of his own lotus eyes in its place. Shiva, moved, gave him the Sudarshana chakra, and the day became Vaikuntha's, the day of Vishnu's own realm, which is said to open to those who worship on it. The Nirnayasindhu quotes the Sanatkumara-samhita: on this Chaturdashi at dawn Vishveshvara himself bathed at Manikarnika and worshipped. The lotus story is told in the Shiva Purana and the Kartika-mahatmya; those chapters have not yet been read at the page.
