History

Tulsi was Vrinda, the devoted wife of the asura Jalandhara, whose faithfulness made him unconquerable. To end his war on the gods, Vishnu took Jalandhara's form and broke her vow. When she learned the truth she cursed Vishnu to become a stone, the Shaligram, and gave up her life; from her ashes grew the Tulsi plant. Vishnu, honouring her devotion, promised to wed her every year and never to accept worship without her leaves. The story is told in the Puranas; its chapters have not yet been read at the page. The day and hour of the wedding are the Dharmasindhu's.
